Sunday Best!

I belong to the greatest women’s organization on the earth!

It has been 175 years since it’s organization. It is called the

Relief Society

of

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

It was organized in 1842, and since then the women of the Relief Society have done so much to bless the lives of others. In this organization we call each other sister.

Linda K. Burton who is the President of the Relief Society today said, ““The First Presidency has told us who we are: beloved daughters of Heavenly Father and dedicated disciples of Jesus Christ who are part of a great worldwide sisterhood, there are almost 7 million Relief Society members in 185 different countries. We are sisters.”

———————————————————————

All adult women in the Church are members of Relief Society. The Prophet Joseph Smith organized the Relief Society on March 17, 1842. He taught that the Relief Society was organized for “the relief of the poor, the destitute, the widow and the orphan, and for the exercise of all benevolent purposes.” In addition, he taught that the Relief Society was “not only to relieve the poor, but to save souls.” The larger part of the work of Relief Society today is “to look after the spiritual welfare and salvation … of all the female members of the Church.” The Relief Society was “divinely made, divinely authorized, divinely instituted, divinely ordained of God.” It operates under the direction of priesthood leaders. (See Handbook 2, 9.1.2.)

When I think of the blessings I have received in my life from being a part of the Relief Society organization I am so grateful for it. I have not only been blessed by the service of my sisters in the Relief Society, but I have had the opportunity to bless other sisters with my service. It is such a blessing to be part of such a wonderful organization!

Happy Birthday Relief Society!!!

Sunday Best!

“If our lives and our faith are centered on Jesus Christ and his restored gospel, nothing can ever go permanently wrong. On the other hand, if our lives are not centered on the Savior and his teachings, no other success can ever be permanently right.” -Howard W. Hunter

A Baby Changes Everything!

At this wonderful time of year I am reflecting each day on the gift that the babe who was born in a manger gave to this world.

It is overwhelming to think about.

God’s own Son, His first born and beloved Son condescended to come to earth in the most humble circumstances and become an example, teacher, prophet and to atone for the sins of all mankind. How could He do it?

Love.

Love is the answer. It always has been and it is what makes life have purpose and lead us back to God, our Father.

When that Baby was born everything changed. When that Baby was born nothing would ever be the same again, and I am so grateful to Him and for Him.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ:

for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth…”

Romans 1:16

The most important thing in my life is my relationship with God.

Everything else is made better because of that relationship.

I believe in God our Eternal Father. He is a loving Father who blesses my life always. Sometimes the blessings I receive, I am not thankful for at first. When I realize the blessing is not going to be fun, but a learning experience, I try extra hard to live in a way that Heavenly Father will help me through it. How does He help me through it? Sometimes an undeniable miracle takes place and I believe He had a hand in helping me. Sometimes, He sends the Comforter, the Holy Ghost to help me feel peace and a feeling that it will all be ok in the end. Sometimes, I get a prompting to try something I haven’t thought of, and that is the answer to making it through the blessing. I know that Father in Heaven wants me to have success and happiness in my life. I trust Him.

I believe in His Son, my Savior, Jesus Christ. I know He came to earth and atoned for the sins of all, including me. We would all be lost without Him. Because of Him we can repent, and be better. How many times will He forgive us? As many times as needed. He paid for all of our sins. He understands our struggles, because he felt them. I am amazed that He could do it. He felt all our pain, sins, sadness, sorrows. I feel sometimes I can’t handle my own, let alone what others are experiencing. He is our example. He was baptized. He led a perfect life, and was obedient to our Father. He wants us to be obedient to our Father too. I know that my Savior wants me to have success and happiness in my life. I believe Him.

I believe in the third member of the Godhead, the Holy Ghost. He is my true eternal friend. He comforts me when I’m sad. He teaches me things I need to learn about life. He brings things to my remembrance, like: that I am important- just like everyone, we are all children of God, that I have a purpose in life, and that I can do what I came to earth to do. I am never alone, and neither are you! I feel Him.

I am so grateful I have a relationship with Heavenly Father, my Brother Jesus and the Holy Ghost. If I struggle, without hope, it is because I am not putting God first in my life. I know that having a life centered on God will bless you too.

Hope your Sunday is the Best! Love, Joy

Sunday Best- Pioneer Day!

Today is Pioneer Day in Utah.

It is a holiday that we commemorate the Mormon Pioneers entering the Salt Lake Valley.

The members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had been through a lot by then. They were known as the Mormons, and had been persecuted for years by people who didn’t understand them. They had been kicked out of different cities, by the people who lived there, told they were not wanted. Finally after the prophet was killed, along with his brother, the saints decided to head west. They wanted to find a place where they could live their beliefs, raise their families, and follow God. It is amazing to me that they were so persecuted in this country that was founded on religious freedom. The pioneers were very stalwart, hearty people, driven by a love of God to move forward and get to the place where they could be themselves. Many died on the way. Many miracles happened on the way. They traveled for 2-4 months, miles and miles. It was a very difficult journey. The period of time that someone crossing the plains would be considered a pioneer was 1847-1869. Once the railroad was complete they didn’t come by wagon anymore. I remember years ago when we took our kids on a trip to the Martin and Willie Handcart Sites in Wyoming. We were traveling in our family van about 60 MPH, and the kids where complaining about how long it was taking to get where we were going. I said, “We’re going 60 MPH, the pioneers went 10-15 miles per day!” They would say, “Wow!” I’m sure they had no clue. It is mind boggling to think about in this age of instant everything.

I am so grateful to my ancestors who came across the plains.

One gal I think of a lot is Mary Malden Peek.

She was my third great grandmother on my maternal side. She crossed the plains walking the whole time, except one afternoon when she was ill. What a trooper!

RichardDyeAndMaryMaldenPeek

This awesome picture is of Mary’s family. She married Richard Dye.

Look how handsome and beautiful they are. I wonder if the children really understood what their parents did? How much they sacrificed to make a better life for them? I love them.

Here is a little clip that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir did about the pioneers.

Sunday Best! Happy Fathers Day!

Daddy80th

“Fatherhood is much more than a social construct or the product of evolution. The role of father is of divine origin.”-D. Todd Christofferson

Happy Fathers Day to all the Fathers out there!!!

This happy and jolly looking fellow is my daddy! He is the best dad for me. His life and example are truly inspirational.

When he was young he dropped out of school. He was probably bored, because he worked and did other things and still ended up getting his GED at the same time the other kids his age were graduating. He was always motivated to get things done, to move forward and accomplish more in his life. This example has made me want to be productive, and accomplish things in my life. Once he finished school, he joined the army. He met my mom when he was stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco. He became a brick layer after that which meant that he could create and build things. He has always had the most beautiful yards and homes because he has a knack for building and creating. My darlin and I had our wedding reception 30 years ago in the yard he designed and landscaped. It was lovely. He got a masters degree and then a PhD. So smart! Such motivation! He was building a home and working a full time job the same year he got his doctorate. Don’t forget, he also had 5 kids and a sweet and supportive wife. He seems to have a vision for the best way to get things accomplished, and then moves ahead to finish what he started. He’ll tell you he’s not perfect, but he really is! He is 82 years old and still active and blessing others with his time and knowledge. My daddy and I have a standing date around the first of each month. He’ll call me and say, “Is this you? This is me, when do you want to have a date?” I just laugh and say, “Yes, it’s me! Is this you?” We set a date and it always turns out to be such a treasured time to me. I sure love my dad! I am so grateful that I have been blessed by his example, and love for all my life!

Thank you Daddy for being a wonderful Father!!! oxoxo

I hope your Sunday was the Best! Love, Joy

Sunday Best!

This quote describes my darlin to a “T.”

“Love is one of the chief characteristics of Deity, and ought to be manifested by those who aspire to be the sons of God. A man filled with the love of God, is not content with blessing his family alone, but ranges through the whole world, anxious to bless the whole human race.” -Joseph Smith

You will not usually see my darlin cruising around with his chainsaw and working on the Sabbath, but we have had some serious wind storms, and trees have been falling on homes, cars, and making a real mess where we live.

Last night the wind start to blow really hard. I’m sure a lot of people didn’t sleep well. Sometime in the night the power went out and by 7:30 this morning I received a text saying that 9:00 church had been cancelled. The power was out in the church.

My sweetie decided to go for a ride and see what things looked like. He ended up driving past our old home. It has many tall pine trees around it. He noticed one pine tree was tipping a bit and when he looked at the ground realized it was going to fall over. He quickly went to the door and let the people who live there now know they needed to move the cars that were parked very close to the tree. They rushed to move the cars and within a minute or so the tree came down right where the cars were.

They were so grateful!

My darlin showed up at home and told me the story, then left with his chainsaw to cut up the tree.

When he got back to our old home. The tree next to the one that fell, was beginning to tip as well. Some of the neighbors noticed the activity going on and started to help clear the limbs and clean up while others started cutting down the other tree.

IMG_6570

I drove over to see the damage. I was amazed and surprised that it never happened while we lived there. What a wonderful neighborhood. People were coming to help without any special request. Just seeing the need and helping. I love these people!

I love my darlin for blessing so many others, and always being “anxious to bless the whole human race!”

Hope your Sunday was the Best! Love, Joy

Sunday Best: Adversity

DSC02796

In church I taught the girls in my class about adversity.

This is a tough one for me,

which is why I think I decided to study it and then teach it, again. I need to keep reminding myself so I can wrap my brain around this one.

I know we need it.

I know it’s part of our mortal experience.

I know why we have to go through hard things, I just don’t like it.

“As part of Heavenly Father’s plan.., you experience adversity during mortality. Trials, disappointments, sadness, sickness, and heartache are a difficult part of life, but they can lead to spiritual growth, refinement, and progress as you turn to the Lord.” -True to the Faith. Paraphrasing: Adversity comes from different sources, consequences from disobedience, as a natural part of life, because of others’ poor choices.

I have been struggling with and watching others deal with all of the challenges of life. It is “a hard knocks life” to quote Annie. So much sorrow, so much selfishness, and dishonesty. So much hurt, and pain.

I recently heard of a terrible incident where a man accidentally killed his own son while target practicing. The young son had a wife and two children. Tragic. Their lives will never be the same. How does someone go on after that?

If you look, you can find all sorts of devastating news about how this or that happened and their life is changed forever. There are evil people, famines, and natural disasters all over the world. So much adversity.

According to True to the Faith- We can complain and become bitter, and let thoughts of “why me?” dominate our thoughts, or we can ask our Father in Heaven to help us learn what He would have us learn, and remember our many blessings. Sometimes if the adversity is illness, we may have to simply be patient and faithful. If our adversity is because of another’s words or actions, we need to work toward forgiveness. Maybe, if it is abuse we need to seek help.

“Whosoever shall put their trust in God shall be supported in their trial, and their troubles, and their afflictions, and shall be lifted up at the last day.” Alma 36:3

One of my favorites stories is about Corrie ten Boom. She and her family were put in a concentration camp during World War II, because they hid Jews from the Nazi’s. Miraculously they were able to keep a small Bible with them in their barracks. For some time the Nazi soldiers would avoid checking on them. They later found out that the soldiers were avoiding them because the barracks was infested with fleas. Corrie’s sister Betsie had encouraged Corrie to give thanks for everything, even the fleas. Corrie had a hard time with this, until she found out that it was because of the fleas that they were able to read their Bible. In the book that tells their story it says,

“like waifs clustered around a blazing fire…The blacker the night around us grew, the brighter and truer and more beautiful burned the Word of God.” -The Hiding Place.

In the most horrible circumstances they were able to learn from their experiences, and become close to God. They were able to remember blessings.

Neil L Andersen said, “In nature, trees that grow up in a windy environment become stronger. As winds whip around a young sapling, forces inside the tree do two things. First, they stimulate the roots to grow faster and spread farther. Second, the forces in the tree start creating cell structures that actually make the trunk and branches thicker and more flexible to the pressure of the wind. These stronger roots and branches protect the tree from winds that are sure to return.

You are infinitely more precious to God than a tree. You are His son or His daughter. He made your spirit strong and capable of being resilient to the whirlwinds of life. The whirlwinds in your youth, like the wind against a young tree, can increase your spiritual strength, preparing you for the years ahead.”

I told the girls in my class that if we do what the trees that live in a windy environment do, if we help our spiritual roots to grow faster and deeper when faced with a challenge by developing our testimony of the Savior and having faith in God’s plan for us, and become thicker and more flexible by staying close to the Lord and His word, we will make it through the challenges and adversity that we will face in our lives.

I am amazed how many times I have had to learn this. I guess I’m still learning and always will be. I will focus on the lesson in life, what God is trying to teach me. I will “receive all things with thankfulness” and become the woman God is leading me to become.
