Totally “Fort Worth” It!

Hermana Kelsey 7:4 -email-

Dear family,
How are things going? I hope all is well. Things are pretty good here.
This week was pretty uneventful. Well, except that we had a ward party on Friday, and we (the missionaries) “sang” in it. We actually didn’t sing, a member did, but we played air mariachi, and one of the elders, Elder D, pretended to sing. It was pretty fun. It was called Noche de Hispanidad (Night of Hispanic Culture). People from the ward brought different food from the places they are from (Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Columbia, etc.) We didn’t get to eat any of the food, because we got there late.
The elders had a baptism finally. They actually had two! 🙂 We were way excited for them, because a few of the elders haven’t baptized in a long time (like 9 months). Crazy!
Anyway, also, Sister Q is originally from Mexico City.
Love y’all lots!! 🙂

(*When Alex was little, he played soccer. They lost almost all of their games. Everyone on the team would be sad. Alex would say, “It’s OK, cause we got treats!” This is typical of Alex, almost always happy and content and looking for the good. What a great guy!!)

Sunday Best!

“To be a righteous woman is a glorious thing in any age. To be a righteous woman during the winding up scenes on this earth, before the second coming of our Saviour, is an especially noble calling. The righteous woman’s strength and influence today can be tenfold what it might be in more tranquil times. She has been placed here to help to enrich, to protect, and to guard the home-which is society’s basic and most noble institution.”       -Spencer W. Kimball

“One hundred years from now it will not matter how much money is in your bank account, the sort of house you live in, or the kind of car you drive, but the world may be a better place because you are important in the life of a child.” -Forest E. Witcraft

****

“Too frequently, women underestimate their influence for good. Well could you follow the formula given by the Lord: ‘Establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God’ (D&C 88:119).

“In such a house will be found happy, smiling children who have been taught, by precept and example, the truth. In a Latter-day Saint home, children are not simply tolerated, but welcomed; not commanded, but encouraged; not driven, but guided; not neglected, but loved.” -Thomas S. Monson

Hope your Sunday was the Best! Love, Joy

Citizenship Day!

Today is Citizenship Day!

What is a citizen? Mariam-Webster says: “A native or naturalized person who owes allegiance to a government and is entitled to protection from it.”

A citizen is a member of a society. As a member, you have certain rights, and you have certain responsibilities. Your rights are: to vote for leaders, maybe even become a leader, freedom to pursue what you want to do with your life, to speak freely, freedom to worship and practice what you believe.

Your responsibilities are: to vote for leaders, be informed about what the government is doing, to help make the community a good place to live, obey the laws of the land, defend your country against enemies, to pledge your allegiance and loyalty to that country that protects you and gives you freedom to live your life the way you desire!

What kind of a “Citizen” are you?

________

“Every good citizen makes his country’s honor his own, and cherishes it not only as precious but sacred. He is willing to risk his life in its defense and is conscious that he gains protection while he gives it.” -Andrew Jackson

—–

“The requisite of a good citizen of the republic of ours is that he shall be able to and willing to pull his own weight.” -Theodore Roosevelt

—-

“Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”              -John F. Kennedy

___

My brother-in-law, Ian, was born in Zimbabwe. This is what he said about becoming an American Citizen:

“I have been a citizen of the United States of America for 10 years. I will always remember the day I took the Oath of Allegiance in the federal courthouse in Salt Lake City. The courtroom was full of immigrants from all over the world who were there on that day to become citizens of the greatest nation on earth. It was a day of great happiness and emotion as we took the oath together.

There may be many things wrong with America, but it is still the greatest nation on earth. Nowhere can a person enjoy such freedoms and such opportunities as here. When we look at the world as a whole, we realize that the majority of human beings do not enjoy the freedoms and opportunities that we do. That realization will always make me grateful to be a citizen of this great country.”

*Family Words*

I don’t know about you, but at our home we have some words that are completely our own. The reason why they are our own is that we made them up.

One day Kelsey was trying to help Emily work through something that she was upset about. I asked her “What’s the problem?” Kelsey said “I’m just trying to consooth Emily.” In case you wondered, that is “console” and “sooth” together. What a darling little girl!! When I am struggling, I love it when I get “consoothed.” It really helps me feel better.

Remember that word. You have our permission to use it!!

Busy Being Glad!

If you were busy being glad

And cheering people who seem sad,

Although your heart might ache a bit,

You’d soon forget to notice it.

If you were busy being good,

And doing just the best you could,

You’d not have time to blame some man

Who’s doing just the best he can.

If you were busy being true

To what you know you ought to do,

You’d be so busy you’d forget

The blunders of the folks you’ve met.

If you were busy being right,

You’d find yourself too busy being quite

To criticize your brother long,

Because he’s busy being wrong.

-Edgar A. Guest

Totally “Fort Worth” It!

Hermana Kelsey 7:3 -email-

Dearest familia,
Hola! Como estan? I hope everything is still good. Did you all have a great week. I hope so. 🙂
Mom: I got your package Saturday. Thank you so much! 🙂 🙂
I am glad that you have decided that losing your job was a good thing. Sometimes it’s really hard to look at a bad/difficult situation, and see the good in it. But everything that God gives us is for our good and for our growth. I was reading the other day in an Ensign, and it was talking about what it meant to be damned. It doesn’t mean that you are going to “burn” or whatever. It just means that you aren’t progrssing. You are stuck. I’m glad that our Heavenly Father gives us opportunities to grow and learn so that we won’t be “damned”. I was like that before the mission, but now I see even more that I really did need a big change in my life.
That’s so cool that you went for a Sunday drive. That is one of my favorite things to do. I miss being able to just drive wherever I want. We have a limit on the amount of miles we can you use, as you may know, so I don’t just get to drive wherever I want, whenever I want. It’s kind of tough. But anyway, it’s kind of ironic you were remembering when I had perthes. Just the other day I was telling my companion about that whole thing, and about how hard it was. Some days I miss being little like that, but even then life was hard, just in a different way. There’s always something happening that helps you to learn and grow.
So this week was really long for me. There wasn’t really anything that happened in particular, except that our baptismal date with one of our investigators fell through. Her mom told her she shouldn’t get baptized because she swears. The mom does not get it at all. It’s very frustrating. And she’s a a member! We have been working with this family for a very long time, and we know that the dad, and the daughter that we had a baptismal date with, are so so so close, but Satan is working really really hard on them. He knows what will happen when they join the church, and he really doesn’t want it to happen. It is always a rollercoaster ride with this family. I remember when I came out on the mission, and in the back of my mind I was like, “Yay, now I get a break from drama and heartbreak.” Boy, was I wrong. I have had my heart broken more times by this family than I ever did in all my time before the mission, and I’ve had to deal with more drama, that isn’t even mine, than I ever did before. Dad, I definitely know what you mean about the drama. It is so not worth it, and I’m pretty sure that’s why I avoided it before. 🙁 The mission is so hard. But I still love it. I’m thankful everyday for the opportunity I have to share this wonderful gospel with other people. 🙂
Dad: That is awesome you hiked the mountain. I think I want to do that when I get home. I still have never done it in my life. But that’s really cool. How’s the weather there in Utah? Is it still warm or is is starting to cool off? It is getting a little cooler here. It reminds me of summer days in Utah. It makes me a little sad, but I still love it. It is way better than 100 degrees or more, plus humidity. 🙂
Emily: I am really going to write you a letter today, and you are really going to write me a real letter back…right?! 😉 That’s what I thought. 🙂 🙂 Anyway…”my one regret in life is that I will never be able to have a pet dog.” 😀
Anyway, I gotta go now. I love you all lots. Sorry that this letter is so depressing/sad, but I really am doing good. Just some hard stuff to deal with. 🙂
Con mucho amor,
Kelsey
